Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then located multiple other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say initial examinations suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
A senior official commented the attack rendered him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
