The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
