The world might be under pressure, however optimism persists. A new award from the interdisciplinary festival Starmus seeks to encourage individuals to take action.

The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will honor in honour of the renowned British primatologist who died recently. It will recognise those who champion life on Earth.

Honoring a Legacy

The inaugural winners are slated for announcement during the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former Starmus advisory board member, had supported the award’s creation. “The idea behind this medal, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, originated with Jane,” a representative said. “Her desire was that she wanted for this to occur. This is likely due to the close relationship she shared with the festival.”

“This medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment a better place for all living beings and ecosystems and offer support to continue that work,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of the festival stated that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – will likely encompass various fields.

“The intent is for it to be inspired by the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach that we created a decade past,” it was explained. Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Sharing thoughts on the outlook for Earth, a prominent voice stated, “Honestly, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. Certain policies globally is conducting an assault on knowledge. So this significantly hampers global initiatives.”

“In truth, the prospects aren't very good therefore we must begin to thinking again, with greater urgency regarding the impact of human activity. This concern encompasses not just global warming, but also the whole way that we treat our environment.”

Following an Example

Consequently, observers believe it was a good time to honor her guiding principles. “It is believed that in bestowing this medal, we will be considering this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her foremost concern, to transform our relationship with wildlife with which we share the planet.”

A major topic today involves the spread of misinformation. The theme of the upcoming festival is set as “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“There is a recognition that truth is becoming a matter of debate when politics are involved. And it’s an alarming trend,” it was said. “Climate research is a science; you cannot allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

The aspiration remains that the medal will spur concrete steps. “It focuses on motivating others to get involved and to show concern and to strive in that direction, really. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we have to focus on working our utmost,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for setbacks, yet we must continue striving towards succeeding.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection expressed hope that “given direction and when empowered, people can be diligent stewards of our planet”, highlighting the initiatives of an institute which, in addition to its projects, assists the youth become engaged with their community, animals, and the natural world.
